Buying plastic model kits from Japan and Europe: where to buy, limited editions and reissues

The same plastic kit can follow different rules depending on whether you buy it in its home market or from abroad. Japan has web-shop exclusives, lotteries and reissue announcements, and Premium Bandai, Bandai's official web shop, does not ship from its Japanese site to other countries 1. Europe has brand web shops and national second-hand marketplaces, and each treats overseas buyers differently. This article has a Japan section and a Europe section. Each covers where to buy, how to read limited editions and reissues, and what to watch for in shipping and payment.

The shipping ranges, shipping fees and import-tax rules below were read on the official pages on 2026-10-13. Rules like these change often, so check the current page before you order. How to read the markings on boxes and instruction sheets is covered in a separate article.

Japan

How manufacturers sort "regular", "reissue" and "limited"

Japanese manufacturers each have their own sales vocabulary, and "reissue" does not always mean the same thing. Tamiya is the clearest, with a dedicated page on its website that gives the definitions 2:

Tamiya categoryOfficial definition (paraphrased)
定番製品 (regular product)Sold in hobby shops nationwide and produced continuously 2
特別販売製品 (special sale product)A discontinued product made once more on a special basis. It is sold in hobby shops like a normal product, but production is not continuous, so buy early 2
特別企画製品 (special planned product)Not produced continuously. It is made and sold on a schedule: after the first production run, it is produced again after an interval 2
限定製品 (limited product)Produced and sold in a limited quantity or for a limited period. It is not produced again, and sales end once the quantity or period is reached 2

The page adds two more points. The category of each product is shown at the top of its product page, and for special sale, special planned and limited products, Tamiya's customer service channel and official web shop generally do not handle them 2. In other words, you have to go to a hobby shop.

An example of a limited product: the 1/350 destroyer Yukikaze movie special edition is listed on its product page under "スケール限定商品" (scale limited product), with a release date around 2 August 2025. It is a limited kit issued to coincide with the film opening on 15 August 3.

Other Japanese manufacturers use different wording:

ManufacturerTerm for a reissueHow it is announcedOfficial definition page?
Tamiya特別販売, 特別企画 (both count as reissues)The category is shown on the product page, and the release date is posted on the website 2Yes 2
Hasegawa再販The new-product list on the home page tags each item "新製品" (new), "再販" (reissue) or "限定品" (limited) 4Not found
Aoshima再生産A "再生産情報" (reissue information) post each month. For example, on 2026-09-30 it announced the list of reissues for February 2027, about 40 items 5Not found
Bandai Spirits再販Prices and timing of reissued items are announced on the website. General-sale items are announced once per quarter, and Premium Bandai items are announced when pre-orders open 6Premium Bandai's FAQ has a "再販" page 7

Hasegawa's product pages have one detail that is easy to miss: they give two dates, "弊社発送" (shipped from the company) and "発売日" (release date). For one item on the website, the 弊社発送 date is 14 October 2026 and the 発売日 is around 17 October 8. The first looks like the day the manufacturer ships to distributors and the second the day shops start selling, but the website does not explain either term, so this is only a reading of the wording.

Reissues: do not assume "it will come back"

Premium Bandai's FAQ is direct about this. If the page of a discontinued or out-of-stock item shows no planned reissue, then no reissue has been decided. Some items are not meant to be reissued at all. Once a reissue or a new round of orders is decided, it is posted on the product page 7.

A reissue is not necessarily at the original price. In a notice, Bandai Spirits said that from April 2025 the prices of some reissued plastic models would be revised, and that reissue timing could also change 6.

Premium Bandai: the Japanese site does not ship abroad

Premium Bandai (プレミアムバンダイ, often shortened to P-Bandai) is Bandai's official web shop, and some products are sold only there. Bandai sorts its products into general sale, Premium Bandai, Gundam Base exclusive and event exclusive 6. The Japanese site is aimed at the domestic market: its FAQ states that it does not ship overseas and that members cannot register with an overseas address 1. Opening the Japanese site from an overseas IP address redirects to a region selection page. It lists regional sites for Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, Singapore, the United States, Australia and New Zealand, plus Shopee stores in the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand and a Tmall flagship store 9. Europe is not on that page, so European buyers need to check which regional sites Premium Bandai offers at the time.

Several rules of the US site (as of 2026-10-13):

  • It ships to the contiguous United States, not to US territories. It does not ship to PO boxes, hotels, APO/FPO/DPO military addresses, courier companies or parcel lockers, and it does not ship to Canada 10.
  • Shipping is 10 US dollars per package (with extra charges for Hawaii and Alaska), and the carriers are FedEx and USPS 10.
  • Payment is only by the methods Global-e supports. Checks, money orders and bank transfers are not accepted, and any foreign transaction fee the card issuer charges is not included in the order total 11.

The Japanese site also keeps one proxy-buying exit: a partnership with Buyee, but only for overseas tourists visiting Japan. When the FAQ was written (June 2024), Gundam models and food could not be bought through it 12. If you are not in Japan, this route is closed. The hottest items on Premium Bandai are Gundam models, which will get their own article later.

Premium Bandai sells in four formats. Tell them apart before you order, because the cancellation and return rules differ:

FormatOfficial description (paraphrased)Can it be cancelled?
抽選販売 (lottery sale)For fairness, a lottery is held first and only winners can buy. Applications made for resale are not accepted 13Not stated on that FAQ page
予約商品 (pre-order item)Orders are taken for an agreed delivery month. Once the pre-order period is over it cannot be ordered, and a delivery date cannot be chosen when ordering 14No cancellation or returns 14
受注生産品 (made-to-order item)Produced only after an order is received. Delivery time is shown on the product page 15No cancellation or returns 15
リクエスト販売 (request sale)Production is promised only if the number of requests reaches the target within the deadline 16Not stated on that FAQ page

Buying second-hand: how condition grades read

Out-of-print kits often can only be found on second-hand platforms. On the main Japanese platforms, the condition of an item is picked by the seller from a drop-down list.

Mercari uses 6 grades 17:

ConditionOfficial explanation (paraphrased)
新品、未使用 (new, unused)Bought recently and never used
未使用に近い (close to unused)Used only a few times, with no scratches or dirt
目立った傷や汚れなし (no noticeable scratches or dirt)Has scratches or dirt that are hard to see without looking closely
やや傷や汚れあり (some scratches or dirt)Has scratches or dirt that show it is second-hand
傷や汚れあり (scratches or dirt)Has obvious scratches or dirt that anyone can see
全体的に状態が悪い (poor condition overall)Has obvious scratches, dirt or damage overall

Yahoo! Auctions (ヤフオク!) uses the same 6 grades, but its explanations add two phrases that matter for models: "未使用" (unused) includes "未開封" (unopened) items, and "全体的に状態が悪い" includes "ジャンク品" (junk) 18. Note that the full definition of "未使用" is "unopened, or bought recently and never used even once", so an item marked "未使用" is not necessarily unopened. Yahoo also advises sellers to add detail in the description when the condition grade is not enough, and its examples include "完成品プラモデル" (an already built plastic model) 18. Buyers are told to treat the grade as a rough guide and to ask the seller if anything is unclear 18.

Rakuten Ichiba (楽天市場) uses a different scale for second-hand goods: 中古品-新古品・未使用品, ほぼ新品, 非常に良い, 良い, 可, 難あり 19.

Words you will see in listings

Some words in Japanese second-hand listings have official definitions or definitions from large second-hand shops, and some are just seller habit. Only the ones with sources are listed here:

WordMeaningType of source
未開封 (unopened)Suruga-ya's definition: only items wrapped in a キャラメルパック (a film wrapping the whole outer box) or in shrink film, which cannot be restored once opened, count as unopened. Items closed only with tape or a sticker do not 20. Yahoo! Auctions puts "未開封" under "未使用" 18Second-hand shop / platform
美品 (fine condition)Opened but with no signs of use, like new, very clean 20Second-hand shop
ランクB (Rank B)The main item has scratches or dirt that lower its value, so it is handled separately from regular items 20Second-hand shop
ジャンク (junk)Suruga-ya accepts no claims or returns on anything marked "ジャンク" 20. Yahoo! Auctions places it under "全体的に状態が悪い" 18. Mercari states officially that "ジャンク品" which are broken or do not work may be sold, because some people buy them to take apart for parts or to repair 21Second-hand shop / platform
欠品 (missing item)An expected accessory is missing. When Suruga-ya buys items, missing essentials such as the box or instruction sheet mean a large price reduction 22Second-hand shop
素組み (straight build)Assembling as is, without modification: no painting, no gluing, and applying the supplied stickers still counts. Also called "パチ組み" 23Community website (not a manufacturer)
ランナー (runner)The rod-like frame around the parts of a kit, with the parts attached to it 23. Tamiya's introductory guide treats "cutting parts off the ランナー" as the first step of building 24Community website; manufacturer
デカール (decal)A marking of text or a pattern applied to the model. Those that are soaked in water and slid off the backing paper are called "水転写式デカール" (water-slide decals) 23Community website

Suruga-ya's buying standards for second-hand models include one rule that helps you judge whether the parts are complete: a few parts detached from the ランナー is not a big problem, but when many parts have come off and it cannot be confirmed that the accessories are all present, the shop either declines the item or buys it at a large discount 22. This is a standard for what the shop buys, not a promise made when it sells to you, but it is a useful reference for your own inspection.

For "未組立" (unassembled) and "箱潰れ" (crushed box), two common words, no official or second-hand shop definition was found, so they can only be read literally. Go by the photos and the item description.

Routes open to overseas buyers

ChannelWhat the official pages say
Premium Bandai regional sitesThe US, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, Singapore, and Australia and New Zealand have their own sites, as above 9
Mercari's official proxy serviceCovers only Taiwan and the US. The Japanese seller ships to a warehouse in Japan, and after the platform inspects the item it is sent on to the address you choose 25
Rakuten IchibaOnly some of its tens of thousands of shops offer international shipping 26. There is also an official forwarding service, Rakuten Global Express, which can combine goods bought from several Rakuten shops, and combining is free 27
Yahoo! AuctionsProduct pages have a "海外発送" (overseas shipping) field showing whether the item can be sent abroad 28. Whether residents of other countries can register and bid directly is not explained in the help pages that were found

There are several Mercari proxy rules to know in advance 2529:

  • Inspection means comparing the received item with the product photos for differences in quantity and contents. It does not include function testing or authenticity checks.
  • After ordering, you cannot cancel for your own reasons.
  • The item is guaranteed to be handed to the international carrier within 30 days of the order.
  • International shipping is by EMS or Mercari Global Shipping. If the package contains food or drink, batteries or power tools, or medical supplies, or exceeds the carrier's size limits, Global Shipping is not available in some countries.

Shipping from Japan: EMS, international parcel, international air packet

For large model boxes, check the size limits.

A Japan Post EMS label for goods, printed with EMS, 国際スピード郵便 (international speed post) and a prompt to check whether the value exceeds 200,000 yen
A 2014 EMS label for goods (sent to Taiwan). The design is old; current labels are created in Japan Post's "国際郵便マイページ" (international mail My Page) 30. Look here only at what has to be filled in: contents, quantity, weight and value, plus the reminder at the bottom to check whether the value exceeds 200,000 yen. Photo: Solomon203, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

Japan Post's EMS size limits differ by country, so there is no single number. The table below is taken from the EMS "大きさ・重量制限一覧表" (size and weight limits table) and lists only a few countries 31.

DestinationMaximum lengthLength + girthWeight
United States1.5 m2.75 m30 kg
UK, France, Italy and most other European countries1.5 m3 m30 kg
Germany, Spain1.05 m2 m30 kg
Netherlands1.5 m3 m23 kg
China1.8 m3 m30 kg

"Girth" (横周) is the combined length of the four sides around the largest cross-section, excluding the length itself. The formula is (height × 2) + (width × 2), and "length + girth" must be satisfied at the same time 32. A note to the table says that individual countries may restrict what they accept 31.

International parcels (by surface, air or SAL) also have a 30 kg limit, with two size standards by country, A and B. A is within 1.5 m in length and within 3 m for length + girth. B is within 1.05 m and within 2 m 32. The 1.05 m / 2 m for Germany and Spain in the table above is standard B, which matches the international parcel page.

Small items (parts, small-box kits) can go by international air packet, up to 2 kg, with length + width + thickness not over 90 cm and the longest side not over 60 cm 33. This service was renamed from "国際eパケットライト" on 1 June 2026 and expanded to the whole world 33.

The Japan Post EMS and international parcel pages do not mention volumetric (dimensional) weight. They say only that the rate depends on weight and destination country 32. How a large model box is finally charged depends on the quote from the proxy or forwarding service.

Europe

Brand websites: first check whether they ship to where you live

Most European manufacturers have their own web shops. Below is what the websites say about US buyers (the US is only an example; for other countries, look at each shop's table of shipping countries):

Brand (country)What the website says
Revell (Germany)The country table on the German site's shipping page lists only European countries, not the US 34. US buyers use the US site, which ships only to the 48 contiguous states and Washington, DC. Orders under 100 US dollars pay a flat 12 dollars shipping, orders over 100 dollars ship free, and PO boxes are not served 35
Eduard (Czech Republic)The website ships to the US and shows prices in US dollars. UPS Express goes DDP (the seller prepays import duties and fees), so Eduard prepays customs duties and fees and the buyer pays nothing further 36
Airfix (UK)The UK site's shipping table includes the US: shipping is 40 US dollars, free for orders over 250 dollars. Delivery is DDP, with the fees due added at checkout, and other charges remain the buyer's responsibility 37
Italeri (Italy)The shipping table on the website lists only European countries and warns that buying from outside the EU may incur taxes and duties. The page does not say whether it ships to the US 38
ICM (Ukraine)Headquartered in Kyiv 39. The "Where to buy" page lists US distributors Stevens International, Military Model Distributors, Sprue Brothers Models and Douglas Models Distributors, along with distributors in the UK, Germany and elsewhere 40. This is a list of distributors and does not mean the website itself ships overseas

Revell's German site also has a dedicated "Revell USA" product line, which the page says comes from the merger of Revell and Monogram, two American model pioneers 41. So the same brand does not put the same stock on the German site and the US site. The official pages do not describe any systematic differences between the German and US boxes or item numbers, so this article draws no conclusion.

Limited editions and reissues: read the product line name

European manufacturers have no single definition page like Tamiya's, but the product line names are themselves a clue.

Eduard's plastic kits are split into ProfiPACK, Weekend edition and Limited edition lines, and the website's product paths are organized that way 42. The three kits below are examples from the website. Each kit's contents differ, so treat them as references and not as a uniform definition of the line:

Product lineExamplePaint schemesEtched partsMasks
ProfiPACKSpitfire Mk.Ia 1/72 (70202)7Yes, pre-paintedYes 43
Weekend editionBf 109G-5 1/48 (84215)4NoNo 44
Limited editionSpitfire Story: The Sweeps Dual Combo 1/72 (2154)11Yes, pre-paintedYes 42

Airfix's "Vintage Classic" series consists of reissues of classic models, with boxes using the original artwork 45. Its gift sets pack the kit, the matching paints, glue and a brush in one box 46.

Reissues of old tooling are just as common in Europe. For the Revell 1/48 tanker truck in the picture below, the image caption says the tooling dates from 1956 and was reissued in 1995 47.

Second-hand platforms: which ones you can buy from directly

The platforms below had their official help pages opened and checked one by one. This is not a full list of European platforms.

PlatformWhat the official pages say about overseas buyersWhat it means for a US buyer
eBayInternational sellers can use ordinary international shipping or eBay's shipping programs. The buyer is responsible for confirming import duties and fees 48You can buy directly, but the shipping method differs by listing, so check "Shipping and payments" in the listing
CatawikiThe list of buyer countries includes the US 49. The buyer pays shipping, which does not include customs duties or import taxes, and these are always the buyer's responsibility 50You can bid directly. There is also a buyer protection fee, usually 9% of the hammer price plus a fixed amount 51. Categories such as Model Cars and Model Trains are visible, but no dedicated plastic-kit category was seen 52
Kleinanzeigen (Germany)Its official safety advice is that sellers should not ship abroad, and the "Sicher bezahlen" buyer protection applies only within Germany 5354The platform covers only domestic trades. A US buyer can generally only use someone with a German address to receive and forward the parcel. This workaround follows from the platform being domestic-only; the platform has not written it down
Marktplaats (Netherlands)The on-site "Verzenden via Marktplaats" cannot be used for shipments to or from other countries 55Same: a US buyer would depend on someone with a Dutch address to receive the parcel
VintedThe help page covers only cross-border trades between the US and the UK, limited to some US states and only for items under 4.4 lb. Items prohibited between the US and the UK include children's items and toys 56Nothing official explains shipping from the EU sites to the US. The page does not say whether a plastic kit counts as a "toy"

On eBay, when and by whom import duties and fees are paid depends on which shipping program the seller uses 48:

What the eBay page saysWhich sellersImport duties and fees
eBay International ShippingThe table says sellers shipping from the US and CanadaThe buyer chooses: pay at checkout, or pay on delivery
Global Shipping Programme (GSP)The table says sellers shipping from the UKIncluded in the checkout total. No delivery to PO boxes or APO/FPO military addresses
SpeedPAKThe table says sellers shipping from China and Japan, but the text on the same page says German sellers can use SpeedPAK to ship to the US, UK and AustraliaThe table says the seller pays. The text says the final fees, including import charges, are paid at checkout
Other shipping servicesThe seller's own international courierCustoms duties and import fees may still be payable on delivery

The table and the text on the same page disagree about SpeedPAK, so do not rely on only one of them. Go by "Shipping and payments" on the listing page. The eBay UK Seller Centre also says that from August 2026, eligible UK sellers will join eBay International Shipping in batches and it will eventually replace GSP. The conditions are that the item is in the UK, is worth no more than 900 pounds, and for now is limited to listings on ebay.co.uk 57. Another page on the US site says the program is currently open only to eligible sellers in the US and Canada 58. The two pages were written at different times.

Reading listing words on European second-hand platforms

LanguageWordMeaning
GermanBausatz / KunststoffmodellbausatzKit / plastic model kit 59
GermanMaßstabScale 41
GermanKlebstoff, Farben (nicht enthalten)Glue, paints (not included); Revell states in its instructions that these must be bought separately 59
GermanDecalsWater-slide decals; German manufacturers' pages also use this English word directly 59
GermanOVPOriginalverpackung, original packaging; not the same as new 60
German / EnglishNIB, Sealed (Verschweißt), BA / OA (Bauanleitung)NIB is New in Box, and the packaging may have been opened. Sealed means shrink-wrapped. BA/OA means the instruction sheet. This line comes from an eBay seller tutorial (a personal blog, not official) 61

Taxes and shipping

First see who pays the import duties and fees, since each seller does it differently:

ChannelWho pays import duties and fees
Eduard (UPS Express to the US)Prepaid by the website (DDP) 36
AirfixDDP, with the fees due added at checkout 37
eBayDepends on the seller's shipping program, see the table above. The buyer is responsible for confirming 48
CatawikiThe buyer, always 50
ItaleriThe website warns that taxes and duties may be charged 38

On the US import side (as of 2026-10-13): the e-commerce FAQ of US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) says that the de minimis exemption for low-value shipments has been suspended. It applied to goods valued at 800 US dollars or less arriving by any means, including international mail. A new informal entry process for mail takes effect on 24 July 2026, informal entry is generally available for shipments under 2,500 dollars, and the gift exemption is unchanged, but things you bought are not gifts 62. Specific duty rates are not given here, since they vary over time and by item.

On the EU side: a page from German customs says exports to non-EU countries are exempt from VAT when all conditions are met, and proof of export is required 63. So when a US buyer checks out at a European shop, some shops remove the VAT and some require you to claim it yourself. Go by the checkout page for how each shop does it.

Carrier limits also matter. The DHL Paket International destination information sheet (September 2024 edition) says for the US: maximum 31.5 kg, maximum dimensions 120 × 60 × 60 cm, PDDP only (the seller prepays import duties and fees), a goods value up to 800 US dollars, and the country of origin and tariff number must be given 64. This is an old edition, so go by DHL's page at the time for current rules. Large model boxes are often bulky and light, and couriers charge by volumetric weight. UPS's formula is (length × width × height) ÷ a divisor that depends on the rate type, given as 139 or 166 in inches 65. Other carriers' divisors have not been checked here.

Common pitfalls

  • Assuming the Premium Bandai Japanese site takes orders directly. The Japanese site is aimed at the domestic market, does not ship abroad and does not accept member registration with an overseas address 1. To buy from abroad, first see whether your region has an official regional site 9.
  • Assuming "it will be reissued when sold out". If the product page shows no planned reissue, the official position is that a reissue is undecided, and some items will not be reissued at all 7.
  • Treating "特別販売" as "限定". At Tamiya, 特別販売 means a discontinued product is made once more on a special basis, while 限定 explicitly means it will not be produced again 2. The two words differ by one character, but only one of them leaves a chance of buying later if you miss it.
  • Thinking "未使用" means unopened. On Yahoo! Auctions, "未使用" includes "未開封" and also items bought recently and never used 18. To find an unopened one, check whether the description says "未開封".
  • Thinking a proxy service's inspection means authenticity verification. Mercari's proxy inspection compares quantity and contents against photos and does not include function testing or authenticity checks 25.
  • Treating OVP as new. OVP only means "original packaging" and does not mean the item has never been opened 60.
  • Asking sellers on domestic-only platforms to ship to the US. Kleinanzeigen's official advice is not to ship abroad, and its buyer protection applies only within Germany 5354. Marktplaats's on-site shipping does not work across borders 55.
  • Looking only at the item price and not at import duties and fees. eBay, Catawiki, Eduard and Airfix all handle this differently, with some including it at checkout and others charging on delivery 48503637. The US low-value exemption has been suspended, and that includes mail 62.
  • Size limits differ by destination even within one country's postal service. For Japan Post EMS, the maximum length is 1.05 m to Germany and Spain but 1.5 m to the US and the UK 31. Measure large boxes first.
