Buy From Mercari Japan. We Check Out Before It's Gone — You Just Get the Package.
Mercari started in Japan years before its US app existed, and the Japanese marketplace still runs on a far bigger, different catalog — anime and manga goods, trading cards, retro game consoles and cartridges, idol merchandise, model kits, vintage toys — most of which was never listed on the US side at all. The interface is entirely in Japanese, and so is every seller message.
Mercari Japan has no bidding — it's first-come, first-served at a fixed price, and sought-after collectibles routinely sell within minutes of being listed. Checking out at all requires a Mercari Japan account tied to a Japanese mobile phone number and a Japan-based payment method (convenience-store payment, a Japanese-issued card, carrier billing) — a US phone number and card simply can't complete the purchase.
Even a seller who'd be happy to sell to someone overseas is usually boxed in by Mercari's own shipping options, which are built around Japan's convenience-store and locker drop-off network (services like らくらくメルカリ便 and ゆうゆうメルカリ便) — domestic by design. So even clearing the account and payment problem doesn't guarantee there's a shipping option on the listing that reaches the US at all.
How It Works
- 1
You send us the listing the moment you see it.Paste the Mercari Japan link right away — there's no bidding and no reservation here, so the gap between "I found it" and "someone else bought it" can be minutes for a popular item.
- 2
We buy it immediately from a verified Japan-registered account, at the listed price.Mercari Japan is fixed-price and first-come-first-served, so there's no negotiating once you've committed — we complete the purchase the instant you confirm.
- 3
If it sells before we can complete the purchase, nothing is charged. That's the real risk on this platform, more than anywhere else we buy from — we move as fast as the checkout allows, but we can't hold a listing for you.
- 4
It's received at our address in Japan.Inspection is available if you want it — just ask, and before it ships we'll confirm it's the item described and check for obvious damage, a match-and-condition check, not a functional test. If you skip this, it goes straight to packing.
- 5
We pack it — standard protective packaging, reinforced for fragile items, or custom crating/palletizing for oversized pieces on request (may cost more) — then weigh it and send you a separate invoice for shipping. That's billed separately from your original quote, since it depends on the actual weight and size once it's packed.
- 6
Once that's paid, we ship it to your US address, usually via DHL, in about 7–14 days. That's a typical range, not a guarantee — customs and carrier delays happen.
- 7
Customs duties are paid on delivery, and we provide the customs paperwork. This is a cash-on-delivery-style charge from the carrier when your package arrives — not something we can prepay or fold into our quote, so budget for it separately.
Pricing
Our service fee is 8–15% of the item's price, with a $20 minimum, on top of what you pay the seller — the exact rate depends on the specifics, so you'll see the real number on your quote. Shipping and packaging are billed separately once we know the actual weight and size (see step 5) — they're not part of this quote.
If it doesn't go through:
- The item sells to someone else before we can complete the purchase — nothing is charged, including our service fee.
- Cancel after we've already bought it on your behalf — we refund whatever we can recover from the sale; our service fee isn't refunded, since the sourcing work is already done.
- The item turns out to be un-exportable, or customs rejects it — we refund the purchase price minus any costs already incurred, and tell you exactly what those were.
Refunds go back through Stripe to your original payment method, typically 5–10 business days. Shipping and packaging fees are refundable until the parcel is dispatched — once it's with the carrier, they're not.
What We Buy
We focus on antique, vintage, and collectible items on Mercari Japan — anime and manga goods, trading cards, retro game consoles and cartridges, idol merchandise, model kits, vintage toys. That's where Japan's domestic catalog runs deepest and where speed and language are the real barriers, not just distance.
Why This Works
We're already set up to buy on Mercari Japan from a Japan-registered account with a Japan receiving address — the two things that actually block a US buyer here — so we can move the moment you send us a listing, instead of you finding out mid-checkout that your US card and phone number won't go through.
FAQ
Mercari Japan has no bidding — it's first-come, first-served at a fixed price, and popular collectibles can sell within minutes of being listed. That's normal on this platform, not a sign anything went wrong.
No — on Mercari Japan, reserving isn't something either of us can do. Send us the listing as soon as you've decided, since the risk is someone else buying it first, not us declining.
Nothing is charged — you only pay once we've actually completed the purchase.
Mercari Japan requires a Japanese mobile phone number and a Japan-based payment method to check out — a US phone number and card can't complete the purchase, and most sellers' shipping options only cover Japan-domestic delivery anyway.
Credit or debit card, Alipay, or WeChat Pay, all through Stripe's hosted checkout. For large or unusual orders, we may arrange a wire transfer instead.
If it turns out to be significantly not as described, we'll step in and communicate with the original seller on your behalf. Any return depends on that seller's own policies — sales are considered final once we've purchased on your behalf, return shipping is your responsibility, and we can't guarantee the outcome.
No — we confirm the item matches the listing and check for obvious damage, but we don't power things on or run a functional test. For retro game consoles and electronics especially, that's worth knowing going in.
Shipping alone typically runs 7–14 days once we have the item — getting the item itself can be minutes to hours, depending on how fast you send us the listing.
