- Die Standard-Streckendiesellok der DB war die einmotorige V160 und die von dieser Lok abgewandelten Bauarten. Den 10 Vorserienloks von 1960 und 1963 folgten von 1964 bis 1968 die 214 Serienmaschinen. Die Lokomotiven wurden von Krupp, Henschel, Krauss-Maffei und KHD gebaut. Von Hamburg-Altona bis Trier waren die Loks über das gesamte Bundesgebiet verstreut in 16 Bahnbetriebswerken beheimatet.
