Based on a patented design by logging entrepreneur Ephraim Shay, the 80-ton three-truck model was one of the most popular standard-gauge configurations for this classic geared locomotive. Designed for optimal performance on the tough grades and rough track common to logging railroads, the Shay remained popular long after steam was retired from conventional use, and many went on to gain a second career in preservation.
